The CCC is a nonprofit debt consolidation service organized and funded by a pool of credit card companies with the primary purpose of helping people with financial difficulties.  The number for the local CCC can be found in the yellow pages or by calling directory assistance.

When you call the CCC, they will assign you a credit counselor.  The credit counselor will:

  • arrange a meeting with you

  • review your case

  • attempt to consolidate your debt into one monthly payment and

  • negotiate on your behalf with creditors

Their goal is to try and lower interest payments into a payment plan that is affordable for you.  If you can afford the new monthly payments and are willing to continue the payments for several years or more this may be a good option.

However, this agency is formed by credit card companies, so they are not completely unbiased.  CCC usually charges a small monthly fee, around $9 per month and sometimes a setup fee of approximately $20.  Fortunately, if you can't afford the fees they will still help you.
